There’s a lot to say about Employee Experience these days. We see EX as the differentiating factor in the quest for any company to thrive. Let us share with you our reasoning and some hard facts to create your own business case.

Emotional commitment of employees to organisation

Employee Experience is part of the Employee Engagement strategy. Forbes provides the following definition of Employee Engagement: “The emotional commitment the employee has to the organisation and its goals.”

It’s not hard to imagine that any effort aimed at increasing Employee Engagement is a challenging one. Many companies are struggling with it. This year’s Global Human Capital Trends research shows that an organisation’s ability to address the issues of engagement and culture has dropped by 14 percent since last year.

14% Decline in Employee Engagement due to two main reasons

The decline in Employee Engagement results is partially due to the fact that work environments have become very complex. Our organisations are becoming bigger and more complicated and so is the world we are operating in.

Furthermore, I believe that another reason companies are failing at Employee Engagement on such a big scale, is due to misguided and unfocused efforts. A large number of leading organisations have recognised the need to enhance the employees’ experience and are therefore using a number of self check tools such as employee self-service technologies as well as wellness and fitness apps.

Here comes the crux: a majority of these tools target Employee Satisfaction, which is extremely important — it is the base for any employee not to walk away — but it is NOT what Employee Engagement is about.

Employee Satisfaction or Employee Engagement?

In essence the emotional commitment we call ‘Employee Engagement’ means employees actually caring about their work and their company. It means they don’t just work for a paycheck, or for the next promotion, but work to contribute to the organisation’s ambitions. An engaged computer programmer works overtime when needed. An engaged retail clerk picks up the trash on the store floor, without supervision. People go the extra mile when they are aligned to a cause.

Purpose key to bring Employee Engagement to life

This ‘cause’ for a company is a well defined Purpose  —  the reason your company exists that goes beyond your day to day business model. Purpose is the Solution your company is providing to one of the challenges the world is facing Today.

Purpose is the Solution your company is providing to one of the challenges the world is facing Today.

Having a Purpose is prerogative for Employee engagement which in turn is the key to activating a high performing workforce.

Increasing Employee Engagement is not an easy job. It requires you not only to be clear on:

1. Your Company’s Purpose including a concrete Purpose Ambition
2. Your plan to Turn that Purpose into Action.

But above all on:

3. The role your employees can play in that process.

To ensure the best outcomes of this process, these questions are crucial:

  • What is the connection between the Company’s Purpose and the Personal Purpose of your Employees?
  • What are they good at, what do they love?
  • Is there a fit between what needs to be done on a daily basis and the purpose related goals?

To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace

In previous articles, we have discussed that engaged employees lead to better business outcomes. According to Towers Perrin’s research, companies with engaged workers have 6% higher net profit margins, and according to Kenexa research engaged companies have five times higher shareholder returns over five years. As former Campbell’s Soup CEO, Doug Conant, once said, “To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace.”.

“To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace.”

Only by connecting your Company’s Purpose to the Personal Purpose of your employees you will create that magical sweet spot that enables employees to bring their “Whole Self’ to the workplace. With that comes an authentic emotional connection that leads to truly Engaged Employees – a key success factor not only for thriving Profits but for a thriving Planet and thriving People as well.
