Employee Engagement ranks tops for ‘HR’s Biggest Challenge’

According to the newest State of the Nation Report, Employee Engagement tops the list of upcoming HR challenges for 2018. It was at the top of the list for 44% of the 447 participants. The other themes that are expected to pose a significant headache for the HR departments in the upcoming year were roughly the same as the ones of 2017. When asked to reflect on their toughest encounters from the past 12 months, professionals ranked recruitment as the clear front-runner, followed by absence management, employee engagement and employee retention.

Interestingly, when asked which areas the participants feel their teams have excelled in, many respondents actually cited the same subjects, which shows that HR does not bury its head in the sand. However, the one topic that seems to be missing from the list was.. Indeed, Employee Engagement.

That’s a shame, and a missed opportunity as well. Employee Engagement tops another important 2018-list as well: the Top Trends for Organic Business Growth in 2018.

This research describes the recent survey executed by Forbes Coaches Council. Over 50 CEOs were asked what their top goals were for organic business growth in 2018. Ninety-five percent (!) said that Employee Engagement was their top priority, with customer experience being the second most common goal. So be aware; if you aren’t making these topics a priority, know that your competitors will. And that you are most likely to see this reflected in their employee productivity, sales and overall ROI.

How Employee Engagement benefits Business Growth and profit

What was the connection between Employee Engagement and Business Growth again? Kevin Kurse, another Forbes contributor explains it using his elegant Engagement-Profit Chain:

Engaged Employees lead to…

Higher service, quality, and productivity, which leads to…

Higher customer satisfaction, which leads to…

Increased sales (repeat business and referrals), which leads to…

Higher levels of profit, which leads to…

Higher shareholder returns (i.e., stock price)

In previous blogs we have already talked about the magic ingredient when it comes to creating authentic Employee Engagement; a clear sense of Purpose. Turning that Purpose into Action is equally important. You might have your Purpose written out and maybe even an Action Plan, but at the end of the day, if you start off your year with business-as-usual activities, your growth will be limited. Get your employees to step away from their desks, select and/or suggest concepts that will help your company grow most in line with its Purpose and ambition, make a plan and above all: DO it! And make 2018 your best year ever.
